More space, done properly.

If your home is starting to feel tight but you love your location, an extension can be the smart alternative to relocating. A well-designed extension gives you the extra space you need while improving how your home functions day to day and adding long-term value.

At New Digs, we take a practical, buildable approach to extensions. We consider structure, services, weather-tightness, and council requirements from the outset so the new space integrates seamlessly with the existing home. The result is an extension that feels like it has always been there, not an obvious add-on.

We tailor extension solutions to suit your layout, section, and long-term plans

We’ll talk through what is realistically achievable, what will require consent, and how to get the best value from the additional space.

We work closely with you to understand your goals, your budget, and how your family uses the home. From early planning and pricing through to construction and final sign-off, we manage the process so you can expand with confidence.

Extension options

Clear expectations from the start.

Bedrooms

Ideal for growing families or creating a dedicated guest room or home office. We ensure new bedrooms meet insulation, ventilation, and natural light requirements while blending with the existing floor plan.

Living areas

Expanding kitchens, dining, or lounge spaces to create better open plan living and improved indoor outdoor flow. This can include reconfiguring walls, adding large joinery such as sliding or bifold doors, and improving connection to decks and outdoor areas.

Second storeys

A great solution where section space is limited. Adding an upper level can significantly increase floor area while maintaining your existing footprint. We carefully assess structural requirements, access, and integration with the current roof and framing.

Sleepouts / Granny Flats

A flexible way to add independent space for extended family, guests, teenagers, or a home office. Small standalone dwellings can sometimes be built up to around 30m² without building consent (subject to specific conditions and council rules). We can advise on what is achievable on your site, whether consent is required, and manage the full design and build to ensure the space is compliant, practical, and future-proof.

Structural expertise you can trust

Home extensions often involve structural alterations such as removing load-bearing walls and installing in-ceiling beams, along with careful integration into the existing dwelling.

Getting these details right is critical not only for durability, but also for safety, compliance, and long-term performance. At New Digs, we combine strong technical knowledge with proven on-site experience to ensure all structural work is planned and executed correctly from the outset.

LBP status

All restricted building work is overseen and carried out by a Licensed Building Practitioner, ensuring key structural elements are completed to a recognised standard and properly documented.

Council processes

We are experienced with local council consent processes and can coordinate documentation, inspections, and compliance sign-offs from application through to Code Compliance Certificate.

Engineering coordination

For structural alterations, second storeys, or complex foundation work, we collaborate with trusted structural engineers to ensure all load-bearing elements are correctly designed and integrated with the existing home.

NZCB Halo Guarantee

As a member of the New Zealand Certified Builders Association, our residential building work is eligible for the NZCB Halo 10-Year Residential Guarantee. This provides added peace of mind that your project is protected and built to a recognised industry standard.
